\( \def\vec#1{\bf{\underline{#1}}} \)
Gegeben sei die quadratische Form
\begin{equation*}
\vec{x}^T\cdot \mathbf{A}\cdot \vec{x}
\end{equation*}
\begin{equation*}
\hbox{mit} \ \mathbf{A}=\begin{pmatrix}a_{11} &a_{12}\cr a_{21} &a_{22}\end{pmatrix}
\end{equation*}
Sei $\vec{b} =\begin{pmatrix}b_1 & b_2\end{pmatrix}$. Betrachtet
werden nun alle Vektoren $\vec{x}$, die der Nebenbedingung
\begin{equation*}
\vec{b}\cdot \vec{x} = b_1 x_1 + b_2 x_2 = 0
\end{equation*} genügen.
Definition
Die quadratische Form $q_\mathbf{A}(\vec{x})$ heißt positiv
definit unter der Nebenbedingung $\vec{b}\cdot \vec{x} = 0$, wenn
für alle $\underline{x}$, welche dieser Nebenbedingung genügen,
der Wert $\vec{x}^T\cdot \mathbf{A}\cdot \vec{x}$ strikt positiv
ist.
Entsprechend wird negativ definit, positiv semi-definit und
negativ semi-definit definiert.
Um ein Kriterium für Definitheit zu finden, setzt man die aus der
Nebenbedingung $\vec{b}\cdot \vec{x} = 0$ gewonnene Beziehung
\begin{equation*}
x_2 = - {b_1\over b_2} x_1
\end{equation*}
in die quadratische Form ein:
\begin{eqnarray*}
\vec{x}^T \cdot \mathbf{A}\cdot \vec{x} &= &a_{11} x_1^2 + 2a_{12}x_1x_2 + a_{22} x_2^2\\
&= &a_{11} x_1^2 -2a_{12} {b_1\over b_2} x_1^2 + a_{22} {b_1^2\over b_2^2} x_1^2\\
&= &\left(a_{11}b_2^2\right. -\left.2a_{12} b_1b_2\right. + \left.
a_{22}b_1^2\right) {x_1^2\over b_2^2}
\end{eqnarray*}
Die beschränkte quadratische Form ist genau dann positiv definit
(negativ definit), wenn die Klammer im letzten Term positiv (negativ) ist.
Es gilt:
\begin{equation*}
\begin{vmatrix}0 &b_1 &b_2\cr b_1\hfill &a_{11}\hfill &a_{12}\cr
b_2 &a_{12} &a_{22}\end{vmatrix} = - b_1 \begin{vmatrix}b_1\hfill &b_2\hfill\cr
a_{12} &a_{22}\end{vmatrix} + b_2\begin{vmatrix}b_1\hfill &b_2\hfill\cr a_{11} &a_{12}\end{vmatrix}
\end{equation*}
\begin{eqnarray*}
&=& -b_1 \left(b_1 a_{22} - b_2 a_{12}\right) + b_2 \left(
b_1a_{12} - b_2a_{11}\right)\\
&=& -b_1^2 a_{22} + b_1b_2 a_{12}+ b_1b_2a_{12} -
b_2^2a_{11}\\
&=& -a_{22}b_1^2 + 2a_{12}b_1b_2 - a_{11}b_2^2
\end{eqnarray*}
Satz
Die quadratische Form
\begin{equation*}
\vec{x}^T\cdot\mathbf{A}\cdot\vec{x}
\end{equation*}
mit einer $(2,2)$-Matrix $\mathbf{A}$ ist unter der Nebenbedingung
\begin{equation*}
\vec{b}\cdot\vec{x} = 0
\end{equation*}
positiv definit (bzw. negativ definit), wenn gilt
\begin{equation*}
\begin{vmatrix}0 &\begin{pmatrix}b_1 &b_2\end{pmatrix}\cr
\begin{pmatrix}b_1\cr b_2\end{pmatrix}
&\begin{pmatrix}a_{11} &a_{12}\cr a_{12}
&a_{22}\end{pmatrix}\end{vmatrix} < 0\quad (\hbox{bzw. }>0)
\end{equation*}
Für die Bestimmung der Definitheit der quadratischen Form
$\vec{x}^T\cdot\mathbf{A}\cdot\vec{x}$ mit der Nebenbedingung
$\vec{b}\cdot\vec{x} = 0$ ist also die Determinante einer Matrix
relevant, die eine besondere Form aufweist. Es handelt sich dabei
um die ursprünglich symmetrische Koeffizientenmatrix $\mathbf{A}$
der quadratischen Form, die von den Koeffizienten der
Nebenbedingung (Vektor $\vec{b}$) und einer Nullmatrix in der
"Nord-West-Ecke", eingerahmt wird. Diese besondere Matrix wird
als geränderte Matrix bezeichnet.
Definition [Geränderte Matrix]
Die symmetrische Matrix der besonderen Form
\begin{equation*}
\overline{\mathbf{A}} = \begin{pmatrix}
(0) &\begin{pmatrix}b_1 &b_2\end{pmatrix}\cr
\begin{pmatrix}b_1\cr b_2\end{pmatrix}&\begin{pmatrix}a_{11} &a_{12}\cr a_{12}
&a_{22}\end{pmatrix}
\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}\mathbf{0} & \mathbf{B}\\ \mathbf{B^T} & \mathbf{A} \end{pmatrix}
\end{equation*}
heißt geränderte Matrix (vgl.
