Inhalte (short description):
The module introduces students to the European Union‘s transition process towards becoming the first climate neutral continent by 2050. It is divided into two parts of roughly equal weight in terms of lecture time. The first part, covered in the first half of the lecture period, provides background information on climate change and the European Union institutional framework, explains basic environmental economic issues and concepts, outlines the European Union's environmental status and its strategy towards Net Zero emissions (in particular the European Green Deal, FitFor55, RePower EU). The second part, covered in the second half of the lecture period, focusses on selected aspects (e.g. energy market, emissions trading, carbon border adjustment mechanism, fiscal and financial aspects). The lecture is accompanied by an exercise which sets in after about two weeks lecture time. The exercise provides and discusses questions sets related to the lecture. It also gives room for individual questions. The lecture as well as the exercise take place weekly (2 hrs lecture per week and 1 hr exercise per week, respectively). The module examination consists of two online homeworks (question portfolios), which are due around mid of the lecture period, and a written exam which will take place at the end of the lecture period. All dates, resources, and other organizational issues will be outlined in the first week of the lecture period.
