​Basic knowledge of game theory and industrial organization is helpful but not essential.

Inhalte (short description):

​This masters's course covers selected topics in the area of contests and innovation. Each student explores, discusses, and presents one of the topics.

Further information will be provided in the kick-off meeting (see further below).

Outline:

(a) We start with giving you a brief introduction to the topics.

(b) You pick up topic, phrase a research question that you want to explore within this topic, and motivate your undertaking. All this you submit as a short proposal.

(c) You write a research paper.

(d) You present your work to the class.

(e) You discuss and provide constructive feedback on another student's topic.

    ​Erläuterungen/Comments:

    a) In his/her proposal each student finds a topic in the area of contests and innovation that is interesting and deserves further investigation. Each student hands in a 2-3 page proposal that introduces the topic, phrases the research question, motivates why it is interesting and important to address this question, and outlines how he/she intends to elaborate the question. 

    b) In his/her seminar paper each student presents the outcome of his/her examination. In the introduction of his/her paper he/she states and motivates his/her topic and outlines how he/she will proceed to examine it. In the main body of the paper he/she presents the outcome of his/her exploration. The final section summarizes his/her findings and draws further conclusions.

    Formalities for the seminar paper: 12-15 pages of text, 12pt font, DIN/A4 with 2.5 cm margins, line spacing 1.5, american quotation system (Harvard system).

    c) Each student presents his/her seminar paper to the other students. Providing feedback to another student gives opportunity to study another topic and fosters the ability to phrase peer-feedback.

    Students are selected according to the module selection regulations. Students who do not attend the first class meeting will be deregistered from the examination and the module. In case you are unable to attend the first meeting, please let us know by sending an e-mail to christiane.borghoff@upb.de before the first meeting. If you do not inform us beforehand, you will be expelled from the course.
