This master's course covers selected topics in Information Economics including fundamental as well as recent theories. This includes the theories of Adverse Selection, Signaling, Screening, Moral Hazard, Information Design and Bayesian Persuasion. You will learn about the role of information and how these affect economic decisions. Examples of applications of these theories are job interviews, the insurance market, marketing, court cases, political campaigns, etc. Each student explores, discusses, and presents a topic based on a scientific paper. Those papers will focus on theoretical approaches. Further information will be provided in the mandatory introductory session. Outline: (a) We start with one lecture session giving you a brief introduction into general theories and the topics of the scientific papers in the 1st week of the lecture period. (b) You pick an issue or a case and phrase a research question that you want to explore. This has to be submitted as a short proposal in the 5th week of the lecture period.

Based on the chosen topics resp. scientific paper each student finds an own research question in information economics that is interesting and deserves further investigation. Each student hands in a 2–3 pages proposal that introduces the topic, motivates why it is interesting and important to address this question, and outlines how he/she intends to further examine his/her topic. In his/her seminar paper each student presents the outcome of his/her examination. In the introduction of his/her paper he/she states and motivates his/her topic resp. research question and outlines how he/she will proceed to examine this. In the main body of the paper he/she presents the outcome of his/her exploration. The final section summarizes his/her findings and draws further conclusions. Formalities for the seminar paper: 12-15 pages of text, 12pt font, DIN/A4 with 2.5 cm margins, line spacing 1.5, american quotation system (Harvard system).
