Inhalte (short description):
The module consists of a weekly lecture (2 hrs) and an exercise (1 hr). The lecture will cover major theories of open economy macroeconomics (international finance). The topics will be based on and follow major textbooks in international finance and give a sound understanding of international monetary policy, balance of payments adjustment and the determination and behaviour of exchange rates. In addition, the lecture will enhance the student's ability to actively participate in the discussion of current issues of international macroeconomics. Essential parts of international trade theory may be included whenever it is necessary for the full understanding of the core topics. Depending on student's preferences, the exercise will be offered weekly (1 hr each week) or bi-weekly (2 hrs every second week). Based on question sets, the topics covered in the lecture will be further discussed and practised. The module examination consists of one online homework (question portfolio), which will be due around mid of the lecture period, and a written exam which will take place at the end of the lecture period. All dates, resources, and other organizational issues will be outlined in the first week of the lecture period.

Studierende... learn how to formally and graphically represent models of open economies and how to use the representations for economic analysis in various problem settings. develop short- and long-run models of the exchange rate and use them to analyze the effect of changes in economic fundamentals and policy variables on key macroeconomic variables.

Studierende... organize themselves in groups and allocate research tasks on topics in open economy macroeconomics. jointly discuss individual research results and present them in oral and written form. gain intercultural competences and communicate in an international team.

Studierende... apply known theories of the exchange rate to critically evaluate current developments of foreign exchange markets and the global economy. discuss and evaluate past and current international economic developments.
