Basic knowledge of industrial organization and game
theory is helpful but not essential. We make use of the Nash equilibrium
concept, its refinements, and its generalizations. |
Inhalte (short description): |
---|
This master's course introduces the economics of
contests and innovation. Special attention is devoted to how the two fields
interrelate. We examine the static incentives to innovate for different market
forms. We show how the order of incentives might reverse once the dynamic
nature of competition for innovation is taken into account. This forces us to
analyze the economics of innovation from a contest perspective. We first investigate
contests (and innovation) deploying the standard game-theoretic approach.
Subsequently, we advocate a novel economic evolutionary approach to contests
and innovation. This approach is capable of explaining empirical phenomena,
some of which, like e.g. ex-ante overdissipation and overbidding, cannot be
explained through the standard game-theoretic approach. |
