This course introduces students to the field of comparative and international employment relations. The goal is to discuss the most important issues that decision-makers in multinational enterprises (MNEs) must consider today when managing human resource management (HRM) in different national settings. In a first step, we will map the various cultural and institutional landscapes by reviewing varieties of capitalism and of culture across the globe and by looking at key differences between countries in terms of collective bargaining, labor standards, and labor market outcomes. Against that background, key topics of international HRM are covered: the transfer of HRM practices, composing an international staff, performance management, post-merger integration, and international pay. The module is rounded off with considerations of a transnational regulation of labor standards and of ethical HRM in a global context. The course is primarily based on textbook chapters with additional research papers and real-world cases. |
