Inhalte (short description):

This course aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of core techniques of quantitative economics and econometrics and their application to test economic theories and measure magnitudes relevant for economic policy or managerial decisions.
It has two main parts. Part A introduces the linear regression model and ordinary least squares (OLS), its assumptions and problems when these assumptions are violated. An emphasis will be on the interpretation of regression results and practical problems in dealing with data. There will be a brief digression to panel models and models for binary outcome variables.
Part B deals with the issue of using data to make causal statements such as "The new marketing concept of company A lead to higher sales of product B” or “Minimum wages raise (or do not raise) unemployment”. Economists are typically (although not always) interested in causal statements – this course equips students with the methods to derive credible causal statements from data.

The course Applied Econometrics starts on January 27, 2025.

It is designed as a 100% self-study course. Starting January 27, you will receive every week until March 31:

    ·  Lecture slides

    ·  Lecture videos (average duration of 70 minutes)

    ·  A problem set (theory and data work)

You are supposed to watch the videos and work on the problem sets. However, you are not supposed to submit the solutions. My suggested solutions will be available one week later. Moreover, feel free to make an appointment or to send me emails in case of questions regarding lecture or problem sets, or any other issues related to causal analysis with micro data.

The exam will be on Friday, 4 April, 2025 (11:00). It will be a 60 minute open-book exam covering lecture and problem sets (but no use of statistical software). The exam will be in presence at the university.

In case you would like to attend: Please send an email to christiane.borghoff@uni-paderborn.de until 20 January 2025.
