Inhalte (short description):
The ongoing digital transformation creates a series of important challenges for the design and management of competitive organizational structures and processes. This course introduces and critically reflects on current concepts in the context of digitalizing organizations and discusses various example cases in order to develop a methodical management ‘toolbox’ as a starting point for meeting future organizational demands.
Using literature and case examples, the course starts with assessing current topics and approaches in the digitalizing organization, with a main focus on challenges for information management and IT management in such a technology-driven environment. Digital Maturity Assessment is introduced as a method to operationalize the digitalization paths of organisations. The course further discusses, how enterprise architectures advance to digital infrastructures and classic IT strategies need to be extended to digital business strategies. In this context, novel topics such as agile methods, DevOps, cloud-based virtualization or Industry 4.0 are introduced, using examples. Next to such optimization demands, the second part of the course sets the focus on exploration as a second main challenge of an ambidextrous modern organization. Related key questions at the interplay of technology and employee behaviours are: How can management deal with ambiguity of the organizational environment (and its novel technologies)? How do employees improvise under time pressure? How can distributed experts be integrated into a globally coordinated knowledge network? How can the organization learn from its employees? What is the role of emergent strategies in turbulent environments? What is the role of IT in bottom-up strategizing processes? The course finishes with a discussion of organizational roles such as the chief digitalization officer and their digital leadership competences, before finally an outlook is given on post-modern information management.
