Inhalte (short description):

This course provides a comprehensive overview of modern growth and development economics. It begins with a detailed presentation of the empirical facts on economic growth and development, followed by an exploration of different theoretical approaches. Both traditional and more recent growth theories and the main development challenges are examined. Special emphasis is paid to the relationship between openness and economic growth and development.

The course is divided into two parts:

1. First part of the semester:

The first part of the semester last 8 weeks and begins with an introductory session in the first week, followed by a 4-hour weekly lecture. Detailed timetables and lecture materials are available on the PAUL and PANDA platforms.

During the lecture, students are required to submit short questionnaires (exact number to be announced). These questionnaires are discussed at the end of each lecture to review and reflect on the concepts covered. With the submission of these questionnaires, students can collect bonus points for the midterm exam.

The lecture concludes with a 60-minute mid-term exam, held towards the end of the first part of the semester (exact date to be announced). The mid-term exam account for 50% of the overall grade.

2. Second part of the semester:

The second part, from the 8th week to the end of the semester, involves a seminar project. Students can choose between two options:

Quantitative project

The seminar examine whether assumptions underlying the theoretical approaches studied in the lecture can be applied to real-world data. Each student develop an individual empirical model related to addressing a specific question related to economic growth and development. A short scientific paper of approximately 12 pages should discuss the empirical model and the results. Each student is required to submit the paper and the computer programming code used for the empirical model individually. The basic of data collection, computer programming, and interpretation of results will be taught in the seminar sessions.

Qualitative project

The seminar addresses a current issue (determined each semester) closely connected to global economic growth and development. Each student investigates a research question related to this issue and submits an individual scientific paper of approximately 12 pages. After submission, students are required to present their papers and discuss them with the project seminar participants.

The project seminar accounts for 50% of the overall grade. Completion of the project serves as the final examination and marks the end of the semester.

During the project phase, students receive support through individual and group consultations aimed at guiding their research and improving their academic writing skills. At the end of the semester, students may review both their examination results and project work.
