Methods of Economic Analyses

Inhalte (short description):

This course introduces the main concepts and methods needed to understand and analyze the macroeconomics of an open economy, international finance and exchange rates. It covers topics such as balance of payments, exchange rate determination, market efficiency and expectations, risk, exchange rate regimes, international financial markets and institutions, exchange rates and asset markets, and borrowing and debt. The course also involves the development of dynamic macroeconomic models as part of a seminar project using computer software (MATLAB and Dynare) applied to selected contemporary topics in international macroeconomics.

The course is divided into two parts:

1. First part of the semester:

The first part of the semester spans 9 weeks and begins with an introductory session in the first week, followed by a 4-hour weekly lecture. Detailed timetables and lecture materials are available on the PAUL and PANDA platforms. This part concludes with a 60-minute mid-term exam, which takes place towards the end of the first part of the semester (exact date to be announced). The mid-term exam counts for 50% of the overall grade.

2. Second part of the semester:

The second part, which runs from approximately the 8th week of the semester to the end of the semester, involves a seminar project in which students are organized into groups. Each student investigates a research topic and submits an individual empirical paper of approximately 15 pages using MATLAD and DYNARE. The submission of the paper is the final examination that marks the end of the semester. The submission of the project paper counts for 50% of the overall grade. Throughout the project phase, students receive support in the form of individual and group consultations aimed at guiding their research and improving their academic writing skills. At the end of the semester, students can review both their examination results and their project work
