Inhalte (short description):

Imagine you face the job of being the project leader for a project which wants to develop a new car, washing machine or bicycle. Now you need to understand at least the basics of each sub-project leader's job. Your challenge is to understand the following:

  • The tasks of all required line functions in a nice overview
  • The complex connection of all these processes.
  • If this makes you curious feel invited to continue reading:

Inspired by industry's practices, this module provides an overview of hands-on process modeling and the content work of line functions in product projects. The goal of the module is to bring all these topics together for a comprehensive understanding of the product development process.

Our modern society is based on an almost uncountable number of “things" which get created in industry. The procedure to design all these products and to produce them in mass-production follows more or less always the same pattern. It is a complex cooperation between many line functions inside a company and as well between companies which means supplier integration. Of course, there are differences between industries such as Chemistry, Automotive, Medicine etc., but the main paradigm is very similar. For an intuitive understanding, this seminar will focus on everyday products such as pens, screwdrivers, printers, washing machines, automobiles, computers, planes and take a “new bicycle project" as an example for exercise purpose.

    The Program:

  • The seminar starts with providing an understanding of business process modeling.
  • Define: a) process and b) model à c) merge both: process model
  • Organization versus Roles
  • Stage Gate Model
  • Excurse: The meaning of language and business process objects as institutional facts
  • The second part focuses on understanding how an integrated product creation process works:
Four paradigms need to be discussed:
  • Stairs model
  • Requirements engineering,
  • Working with suppliers,
  • Defining the production,
  • All these 4 paradigms get combined and out of this a high-level, cross-functional time schedule for product creation gets derived.
  • Part three dives into the work which the different line functions must do along the high-level plan.
  • Project lead
  • R&D
  • Manufacturing
  • Logistics
  • Purchasing
  • Aftersales
  • Finance
  • Quality
  • Sales
  • Thesis:

  • Participants of Master phase:
  • For the topics 1a-d, 2a-e and 3a-I a list of leading questions is available.
  • Following these questions a thesis shall be created, deep diving into the topics and explaining them.
  • Additionally for participants of Master phase (for bachelor students optional if wanted)
  • Imagine a virtual company producing classic bicycles.
They want set-up a project for an electric bicycle.
è Transfer the theoretical part of your thesis to the operative eBicylce project.

    Students will understand…

  • the paradigmatic way of product creation in OEM industry, including key methods such as process modeling and an idea of the focus of project management.
  • the fundamentals of line function work and processes in industry.
  • key industry concepts like stage-gate models, supplier integration, and high-level cross-functional time schedules.
  • how to present their own research results convincingly.
  • Fachkompetenz Fertigkeit (practical professional and academic skills):
    Studierende...

    Students will be able to…

  • use the learned content when stepping into industry and work in new product creation projects.
  • transfer the abstract product creation process to an application such as the creation of everyday products like an eBicycle.
  • synthesize paradigms like requirements engineering, supplier collaboration, and production planning into a coherent product development strategy.
  • develop a project plan considering the roles of suppliers and the needs of different departments (e.g., finance, aftersales, quality).
  • Personale Kompetenz / Sozial (individual competences / social skills):
    Studierende...
  • can apply various research methods and presentation techniques for the preparation of independent theses, in particular as training for the preparation and presentation of the Master's thesis.
  • are able to give students well-structured, critical and constructive feedback.
  • actively accept critical-constructive feedback and successfully implement it to further develop their seminar paper.

It is expected that students bring some flexibility into participating in this seminar. The coordinator, Prof. Dr. J. Krueger, has more than 20 years of experience in process and project management in the automotive industry – however, this is the very first time to bring all these experiences into a comprehensive and methodological view. The idea is to elaborate jointly the product creation process and try to apply it hands on the idea of developing an electrical bicycle. Participating students agree to provide their thesis / presentation to be partially used in a potential publication.

Following the lectures, a list of topics will be distributed for the participants.
Each student can choose their own topic (for seminar thesis and presentation).
One student = one thesis (Each topic will be assigned to only one student)
