Inhalte (short description):

This seminar focuses on the critical review of empirical studies in behavioral and environmental economics. Each student is assigned an academic paper, which they are expected to evaluate in a manner similar to the peer review process for a refereed journal. The learning objective is to develop the ability to understand and critically assess empirical research. Students are expected to evaluate the research question, empirical strategy, contribution to the literature, and the relevance of the findings. In addition, they should engage with the body of literature into which the assigned paper is embedded and reflect on how the study relates to existing research in that specific context.

The kick-off meeting will take place in the first week of the lecture period.

The seminar is structured as follows: Students work independently over the course of the semester and prepare a written review of their assigned paper. The review must be written in English. The submission deadline is scheduled for approximately the third-to-last week of the lecture period; the exact date will be announced on PANDA. In the final weeks of the semester, students will present and discuss their reviews in class. Attendance at all presentation sessions, including those of fellow students, is mandatory.

By critically engaging with empirical research, students develop essential skills in academic writing, scientific reasoning, and the evaluation of empirical methods and findings. The seminar also provides a solid foundation for writing a master's thesis in empirical economics.
