The skills and knowledge that students have gained in the previous four IBS English modules are brought together in English V in a three minute thesis (3MT) competition. Working either with their bachelor dissertation topic or a subject of potential dissertation interest, students showcase their English academic writing and oral skills in several ways: developing a research project proposal, submitting a competition abstract, writing an academic exposé, delivering a recorded presentation and interacting with peers in round table discussions. Students are guided in preparing an English-language exposé in which they develop research questions and review key literature in the field. For the 3MT presentations, students are challenged to present their topic knowledgeably, concisely, accessibly and interestingly for experts and non-experts alike. At the same time, they must persuade the audience of the relevance of their subject to the field of business and economics. The round tables provide the opportunity to discuss topics critically and analytically. Against this background, the course contributes towards preparing students for their bachelor thesis through the development of academic competencies in the English language. |
