Grundzüge der Volkswirtschaftslehre

Inhalte (short description):

​The module covers theories of international finance/international macroeconomics and international trade. In the lecture on international finance, major theories of open economy macroeconomics are presented and applied. The topics covered give a sound understanding of international monetary policy, balance of payments adjustment and the determination and behavior of exchange rates. In addition, the lecture will enhance the student’s ability to actively participate in the discussion of current issues of international macroeconomics. In the lecture on international trade the student will learn theories of international trade and the globalization of the market for goods and services. Traditional as well as modern trade theories will be introduced and discussed. The exercise comprises readings on basic principles in international economics and finance and gives the opportunity for questions related to the lectures

  • know major facts about international trade, trade among regions and comparative advantages of industrialized, newly industrialized and developing economies.
  • understand the impact of openness and globalization on economic welfare.
  • know important facts about major currencies and currency markets.
  • collect own data on trade in goods, services and capital of major industrialized, newly industrialized and developing countries.
  • learn how to use micro- and macroeconomic models to explain international trade of different and similar countries, the existence of comparative advantages, the advantage of specialization and  the dynamics of comparative advantages.
  • Fachkompetenz Fertigkeit (practical professional and academic skills):

  • learn how to formally and graphically represent models of open economies and how to use the representations for economic analysis in various problem settings.
  • use economic models to theoretically derive comparative advantages and patterns of specialization in trade.
  • develop short- and long-run models of the exchange rate and use them to analyze the effect of changes in economic fundamentals and policy variables on key macroeconomic variables.

  • organize themselves in groups and allocate research tasks on topics in international trade and open economy macroeconomics.
  • jointly discuss individual research results and present them in oral and written form.
  • gain intercultural competences and communicate in an international team.

  • apply known theories of trade and the exchange rate to critically evaluate the current situation/future perspective of globalization and the dynamics of comparative advantages.
  • discuss and evaluate past and current international economic developments.
