Colonialism institutionalized extractive
economic institutions and unfree forms of labour including outright slavery.
The colonial past still influences current political debates as well as
economic structures. This interdisciplinary seminar focuses on colonial history
with a particular focus on labour markets and economic institutions, on
postcolonial theories and on the lingering impact of history on contemporary
institutions. Empirical examples will focus on selected African countries and
regions. The seminar is addressed to students of history as well as economics
and management who are interested in understanding how current (post-)colonial
debates and contemporary economic structures have been influenced by the
Colonial period, roughly the 19th and early 20th century.
The seminar will focus on selected texts, which students will shortly introduce
and which will then be discussed in class. |
