Students are expected to have a solid (undergraduate-level) knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Some knowledge of international economics is helpful, but no prerequisite. Students need to be ready to use Stata (or other statistical software). Some previous knowledge of these programmes is therefore beneficial, but no prerequisite. |
| Inhalte (short description): |

This course discusses recent developments in international trade. It gives an advanced introduction to firm heterogeneity in international trade, covering stylized empirical facts about exporting firms, a discussion of how firms select into exporting (Melitz model), product quality and exporting and multi-product firms (first and second third of the term). The course also discusses recent advances in global value chain models and trade and the environment (last third of the term). To prepare students for data work, STATA is introduced as a statistical software and students learn how to manage data and run simple regressions in STATA (first third of the term). Students will solve 5 problem sets, applying the acquired theoretical and empirical knowledge and present the solutions in class (dates spread out over the second and last third of the term, during the lecture time slot). The course takes place with regular apppointments during the term. The course finishes with a final exam in the designated phase after the lecture period. |
