English version:

Why don’t you want our blood?

15.000 doses of donated blood are needed every day! Why are we not allowed to donate?

In Germany it is extremely hard to impossible to donate blood as a gay/bisexual man or trans* person. These groups are considered HIV risk groups. 2017 the regulations were loosened, so that gay and bisexual men can donate blood after living abstinent for at least one year. We say, that regulation is obsolete. There is no mediacl-scientific reason for one year of abstinence before donating blood or plasma. We are not denying the existence of HIV risk groups, the data is public and well understood. But an infection with HIV is already detectable after six weeks to four months. Also, every donation is being screened for infectious diseases. For plasma donations the process is even more painstaking. The donated plasma is stored for four months to be compared to a follow-up donation of the same person. By this procedure, it is ensured that no infections can enter the donation cycle. Because of that, we call for a reduction of the abstinence period down to four months after having a risk contact. Countries like Great Britain already have this regulation. The exclusion of certain groups from doanting blood is just arbitrary. A coherent regulation, e.g. depending on the number of changing sexual partners seems more suiting and fair.

Another absurdity is that heterosexuals which have an HIV-positive sexual partner only have to wait four months. The same thing applies for people who went to e.g. malaria risk areas. We call that discrimination. The awareness of the risk of an HIV infection is well known in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Especially the situation of trans* women is sensitive. The German medical council says:

„The AIDS-related education programm often do not reach the target audience, because the affected persons (male-to-female) are seeing themselves as women, even if the male reproductive organ is still present after surgical corrective actions.“

„The often seen, often maybe temporary sex work leads to transsexuals having a higher HIV risk. Not only compared to sex workers but also to MSM (men having sex with men).

First of all, these statements are deeply transphobic. The description „transsexual“ is outdated and is implying a connection to a persons sexual identity. Beyond that, the German medical council is assigning trans* women a high affinity to prostitution. The studies referring to this statement are US-American studies, numbers for Germany are not available. Said studies state that 11% of all interviewed trans* people are or have been active in sex work. To ban a whole group of people from donating blood, based on these number sounds like viciousness or just laziness. Of course, the HIV infection risk is greater in the mentioned groups, but this does not make the disproportionate measures legitimate. People from the affected groups are ascribed to carelessly go through life without thinking about the consequences. Obviously, it is the opposite. Most people from the LGBTQIA+ community have to think twice about every step they make in life.

We do not want to attack the employees of the DRK or other similar organizations, they do great work! For us, it is a matter of principle of systematic discrimination of non-cis-heterosexual people, although their blood and plasma is needed as well. You can often hear or read the lamentations of a shortage of donated blood, so it makes no sense to just generally exlude whole groups of people or make access as hard as possible.

Quellen/Sources:

[1] https://www.queer.de/detail.php?article_id=33079

[2] https://www.bundesaerztekammer.de/fileadmin/user_upload/downloads/pdf-Ordner/MuE/Blutspende_22072016.pdf

[3] https://www.mdr.de/wissen/tag-der-blutspende-100.html

[4] https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/richtlinie-fuer-blutspenden-die-unterscheidung-in-homo-und.1769.de.html?dram:article_id=400050

[5] https://www.einfachlebenretten.de/rund-um-die-blutspende/was-passiert-mit-dem-blut-nach-der-spende.html
