The Hermannsdenkmal was built in the 19th century by Ernst von Bandels in memory of the "Battle in the Teutonburger Forest". During the battle the leader of the Germanic people, Hermann the Cheruscan, lead his people to defeat the army of the Roman empire, lead by commander Quinctilius Varus. In the 19th century this historical event was used as the founding myth of the German nation. Since then the monument has become one of the most famous destinations in North-Germany. It is located on the Grotenborg, which is 386 m high, in Hiddesen, south-west of Demtold and attracts more than half a million people a year.

Opening time of the monument:

01. March to 5. November: 9.00am to 6.30pm
06. November to 28. February: 9.30am to 4pm
Warning: Weather related changes can occur. In cases of black ice or heavy snow the monument will be closed. Changes in opening times can occur on short notice.e.

Opening times for the tourist information

01. April to 05. November: 10.00am to 6pm
06. November until end of March: Saturdays and Sundays 12.00am to 4pm
(closed on christmas eve and new years)
Changes on short notice are possible.

Entrance fee to climb the monument

Adult: 3,50 €
Child (up to 14 years old): 1,50 €

Comination-ticket Externsteine - Hermannsdenkmal

Saving by climbing on both tourist attraction :
Adult: 4,50 €
Child (up to 14 years old): 1,50 €
Allows climbing on both attractions once within one season.

No combination-tickets during the winter month, due to weather related opening times of the Externsteine.
