Abstract:
The goal of our project is to develop methods for the preparation of functional, structured three-dimensional photonic crystals working in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region. Based on the results achieved during the first period (size control of functional polymer spheres, preparation of high quality photonic crystal films of pre-determined thickness, first heterostructures) we will (i) explore the potential of the epitaxy of polymer beads to produce heterostructures and (ii) work on the controlled incorporation of three-dimensional defects and (iii) light emission inside a photonic structure. The basis for this work is the synthesis of various functional monodisperse polymer beads. We want to modify and optimize their synthesis as the chemical basis for:
1) the preparation of heterostructures from different photonic crystal films,
2) the fabrication of defect planes and defect lines inside polymer opals, as well as
3) the expansion of the accessible wavelength region to longer wavelengths by the preparation of larger monodisperse spheres. In addition we want to
4) continue our work on inorganic replica formation.
